Goldfields-Esperance Community Chest Fund Recipients announced

Date published: 27/01/2017

The Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission (GEDC) is pleased to announce the successful grant recipients for the 2017 Goldfields-Esperance region’s Community Chest Fund, made possible by the State Government's Royalties for Regions program. $505,538 has been invested in 16 locally driven projects.

The Community Chest Fund provides voluntary organisations and community groups with grants of up to $50,000 to support local projects.

Shayne Flanagan, Chief Executive Officer of the GEDC said that “a broad range of projects and organisations across the Goldfields-Esperance region have significantly benefited from the fund in recent years”.

Kate Fielding, Chair of the GEDC said “The Development Commission is committed to supporting local projects that attract investment, increase job opportunities and improve the quality of life for people living in the Goldfields-Esperance region; the Community Chest Fund enables this to happen.”

“Sixteen projects will be funded in the Goldfields-Esperance region from the latest round of funding. The Community Chest Fund is an example of how Royalties for Regions is helping to deliver small projects that make a big difference in the lives of people living in the Goldfields-Esperance region.”

Included in this round of funding is $50,000 to the Shire of Leonora to fund the 2017 Leonora Golden Gift event. The funds will improve marketing of the nationally recognised athletics carnival.

The funds would also be used to create a ‘Youth Zone’ which would include entertainment and activities for young people. The funding will also be used for specialised timing equipment to ensure world standard racing timing compliance. The funds will also be used for the technology for live race footage to be streamed across Australia and to selected international viewers.

The Goldfields Brass Band will receive $5,000 to enable them to purchase a purpose built trailer for transporting equipment to and from events. The much needed funding will enable the Brass Band to gain greater mobility.

Currently the band use an array of personal vehicles to transport chairs, music stands, boxes of music folders and some of the larger instruments including basses and percussion. Being the only brass band for 400km, they serve the community by bringing music to the masses playing at community events across the region.

The Shire of Ravensthorpe will receive $40,000 to fund the development of the Munglinup Community Playground. The equipment installed in the new community playground will be suitable for children of all age groups.

The new equipment will be located closer to the community centre and recreational assets which will make supervision easier. Apart from the essential structure the new playground will also have a flying fox, free standing cube and tornado swing. Soft fall flooring will also be installed across the play area.
