New coastal planning policy launched at coastal conference

Date published: 5/08/2013

The revised State Coastal policy was released at the 2013 WA State Coastal Conference in Esperance by Planning Minister John Day,  who said balancing he impact of our growing population with the conservation of our coastal environment had never been more important.

Key coastal stakeholders and the wider community provided input into the revised policy which provides guidance for land use and development  along Western Australia's  20,000 kilometre coastline and will assist local governments in preparing schemes, amendments, structure plans, development proposals and management plans relating to the coast.

"It strikes the right balance between ensuring access to the coast for leisure and recreational activities; managing the need for housing commercial development to accommodate outgrowing population and protecting our environment" the Minister said.
